Issue 5 takes the reader back to the beginning of the series with another look at Prof’s attempt to enter Challengers mountain. Fast forward to the present where Prof and his rotting doppelgänger are fighting it out on the skull of a dead giant hurtling through space (you read that right). As the New Challengers find themselves facing a rotting version of Bethany, Mo sees what happened to the mountain after they left and they come up with a plan to lure Prof back.

Their plan is successful and we finally get some answers from both versions of Prof as to who they are and what they want including a direct connection to the Dark Multiverse and the destruction of the Source Wall. The team is left to determine which one to trust and they had better figure it out fast because time is running out.

I really liked this issue and the stories that are finally revealed. There are some interesting moments in the story and the dialogue is well done. It really shows the evolution of these characters from complete strangers to a pretty competent team when faced with adversity. Gillespie and Snyder do a great job of getting the reader to care about these people while at the same time being concerned where they will fit in regards to the original Challengers. The book asks a lot of questions as it unfolds its mystery and that type of layered storytelling is worth exploring.

Marion’s art is amazingly detailed in this issue and I really enjoyed the composition of the panels as well as how the action was depicted. There are panels that show a sense of movement in the action and that helps to enhance those moments on the page.
