Matt Murdock finds himself at the foot of Karen Page’s grave with no idea how he got there, why he is there or who he is. His confusion only intensifies when he finds himself face to face with NYPD Detective Frank Castle. Frank tries to reassure Matt that they know each other, even if he doesn’t remember how. When Matt begins to regain his memories, he flees from the area still unable to remember anyone else.

When Matt turns to the only person he can think of, Foggy Nelson, for help, he finds that Foggy is partners with Jennifer Walters and neither one of them knows who Matt is or can see what he can. As Matt flees from the building, Wilson Fisk meets with Bullseye in his office to discuss his tracking of Murdock. Bullseye receives a file for his labor and neither one of them can understand why they are after Matt at all. The only thing Wilson knows is that the force he works for is responsible and whoever it is has Kingpin terrified.

This issue grabbed by attention from the first panel. It’s an interesting and creative story Cates is creating with this first issue and an interesting mystery that is being laid out both in the narrative and the visuals. Cates leaves just enough mystery in the story to keep the reader interested and even after finding out who the villain behind the events is, the how and the why are still compelling enough questions to keep the reader invested.

I enjoyed Foreman’s art in this issue. All of the panels looked great and the subtle visual additions like Ben Grimm looking into a mirror and Jennifer’s hand turning green when she grabbed Matt’s wrist add great elements to the story. Really interested in seeing where this goes next.
