Director James Mangold and actor Hugh Jackman sat down with The Hollywood Reporter recently to talk about the legacy of Jackman’s final turn as Wolverine in Mangold’s Logan released last year.

In the same piece, Mangold told the reporter that they are working on a script for a spin-off of the popular film which  took in over $600 million at the box office during its run and received audience and critical acclaim. According to James Mangold; “We’re just working on a script,” he said. He also praises Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman film as an example of a female-fronted genre film that works.

“Patty’s success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist,” says Mangold. “The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming.”

With a script in development, the possibility of an X-23/ Laura film in the future becomes more of a reality.
