The Rundown: Nightwing is trapped in a horrific nightmare and his only ally is The Scarecrow.

Nightwing awakens and finds himself an inmate of Arkham Asylum where he is submitted to torture. Afterwards, he is taken to his cell by animalistic looking guards. Next, an escape attempt quickly turns violent, and the masked hero soon finds himself confronted by his past. Then, a dizzying series of events leads Nightwing into conversation with a deadly enemy.

The Story: I was really impressed by this chapter. I liked how this nightmare dealt more with Dick’s feelings about himself and how his actions relate to those around him. It was a bold choice by the creative team and makes for a more interesting character study than the typical call back to an origin story. I feel that this narrative also speaks to Dick’s greatest powers, his network of community and ability to work with others. Having an unlikely potential allyship puts Nightwing at his finest and I can’t wait to see how it all shapes up.

The Art: This issue uses detailed artwork and bold coloring to present a visually impactful presentation of the tale. There are some good-looking and intense action scenes as well as some downright scary artwork that perfectly fits the tone of the particular scenes. I was impressed by the way this chapter plays with realism and fantasy in a way that is reminiscent of vintage tv shows such as the Twilight Zone and Night Gallery.
