The Rundown: Task Force XX encounter Element X and Luke Fox finds himself in an unexpected predicament.

The story opens Luke recounting his motivations for recruiting Task Force XX. Elsewhere, on the Justice League’s moon base, the task force begins to infight as they discuss their current situation. Soon, they find themselves in an altercation with Element X and suffer another loss to the team. Afterwards, Task Force XX must determine how to proceed. Back on Earth, Luke’s has a run-in with the authorities that quickly turns chaotic.

The Story: Phillips provides interesting world building mixed with physical and emotional conflict in the best possible manner. I am really impressed with how this storyline is able to blend the chaotic world of Harley Quinn with the stoicism and tenacity of Luke Fox, and the similarities between the two are not lost on me. Although they appear as two disparate figures, they are both seeking to change themselves and break away from the direct influence of their previous leaders. I am curious at how they will use their newfound freedom to shape their identities, and if they will successfully combine their talents to defeat this new enemy.

The Art: This chapter uses detailed artwork in a modern realistic styling. There are some interesting action scenes and well-done character design that provide an emotional connection with the narrative. Overall, I felt the illustration perfectly matched the story.
