The Rundown: Rose Lee will stop at nothing to find and rescue her daughter.

A woman finds herself floating into deep water with a dangerous, bleeding wound to her throat and thoughts of her life before and her daughter who needs her. Rose is a young woman raising her daughter in a dark area known as the factory. A factory that seems to be holding something behind a wall that could kill everyone.

In the midst of her daily life, Rose finds some comfort in raising her daughter Ava. Unfortunately, Ava is getting older and that puts her at risk of being taken from her. When Rose goes to pick her up from school and finds her missing, she decides to find her daughter no matter the cost and it might end up costing her life.

The Story: Lemire crafts a dark, engaging fantasy in this first issue. There is a big mystery in this series and I found myself completely engaged with it as well as the human story with Rose and her daughter. The story drew me in with the characters, plotting and world building and I look forward to seeing where it goes next.

The Art: Nguyen creates some beautifully detailed and visually compelling art throughout the issue. I love the visual contrast between the stark reality and Rose’s memories.
