Any kid that’s grown up in the last few decades has learned about movie tie-ins and how studios use merchandising to continue to sell a movie or TV after its release. No company knows that better than Disney so it is interesting to see that PIXAR is taking that dynamic and reversing it.

In 1995, audiences were introduced to Buzz Lightyear. A toy based on a popular film series, Buzz had to learn in the film that he is in fact a toy and not a real space ranger. Well now we get to see the film that the toy is based off of with Disney/Pixar’s Lightyear.

According to the Disney Investor Day 2020 presentation from PIXAR, Lightyear, slated to open in theaters on June 17, 2022, is a sci-fi action-adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear (voice of Chris Evans)—the hero who inspired the toy. The film reveals how a young test pilot became the Space Ranger that we all know him to be today. “Lightyear” is directed by Angus MacLane and produced by Galyn Susman.
