The Rundown: A disparate group of detectives team up to challenge the threat of the powerful organization known as Leviathan.

The tale begins two years ago with a meeting between Talia Al Ghul and Mark Shaw. Then it skips ahead to several weeks from the current time. Then, Damian Wayne (as Robin) confronts Talia while she is on a mission. When they are spotted by opposing forces, mother and son find themselves in an awkward predicament. In the present, Steve Trevor meets with the members of Checkmate in a secret location. The group then discuss Leviathan and ask pointed questions regarding a teammate. Later on, Lois Lane makes an unexpected discovery.

The Story: Bendis has crafted an interesting story-line involving an unusual mix of characters. This first chapter is filled with intrigue. And while the main plot immediately captured my attention, I am excited by the family drama involving Robin and Talia. I’m curious as to what, if any, effects that relationship will have on her tenuous position within Checkmate. Overall, this was an enjoyable edition, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

The Art: In this issue, Maleev uses a traditional art style that is paired with a changing palate of colors and tones cultivated by Stewart. Each scene is visually pleasing and engaging. I really enjoyed how the artwork completely captures the mood of each time period and setting.
