Carrie Fisher to Return for Episode IX

The return of Peter Cushing’s Governor Tarkin in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a huge step forward for both special effects and story telling.

The additional cameo from a young Carrie Fisher at the end of the movie was a surprise for fans. Well there is news regarding the fate of Fisher’s General Leia and her role in Star Wars Episode IX.

According to the late actresses brother Todd Fisher, both he and Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd gave permission to Disney and Lucasfilm to use recent footage of the actress in Star Wars Episode IX set for release in 2019. Fisher completed her role in the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi due for release this December. Todd Fisher confirmed the news to the New York Daily News. He is also quoted at the TCM Film Festival as saying, “Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is, you don’t.”

This isn’t a reversal of the companies previous stance of not using CGI recreation for Leia in the sequel films, but more akin to the found footage of the X-Wing fighter pilots not used in Episode IV that were included in Rogue One. While we don’t know how much footage was shot and how the story of the Rebel leader will be concluded, it is comforting to know that Carrie Fisher’s iconic character will move forward in some capacity.
