As a child of the 80’s, one of my ultimate cult classic films from that era was the 1986 film Flight of the Navigator. Well, like everything from my childhood, a studio has decided to reboot it for the new generation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has hired actor/director Bryce Dallas Howard to direct a reboot of Flight of the Navigator for Disney Plus.

The original film was about a 12 year old boy who was abducted by an alien and returned to Earth eight years later at the same age he left. After discovering what happened to him, he finds the alien ship that took him and he and the ship’s artificial intelligence bond as they try to escape the government and find a way to send the boy back to where he belongs.

The reboot will feature a female lead, but nothing else has been revealed about the film.

Bryce Dallas Howard is known for her roles in front of the camera in movies like The Help and the Jurassic World series, but she has been crafting an impressive list of credits behind the camera helming episodes of The Mandalorian for Disney Plus as well as an upcoming episode of The Book of Boba Fett. Flight of the Navigator will be Bryce Dallas Howard’s first feature film directing gig.

The original Flight of the Navigator is currently streaming on Disney Plus.

Have you seen the original Flight of the Navigator? What do you think of Disney Plus rebooting the film? Let me know in the comments.

I made my kids watch it because they were annoying me and they actually enjoyed it. As an adult I found Pee Wee grating but not as bad as I thought
