The Rundown: A woman embraces the darkness inside her to gain access to the power she needs.
Anna Ripley is on the run from the forces of the Dwendalian Empire when she is discovered by two people who invite her to a meeting with Sylas and Delilah Briarwood. A meeting where she will be offered everything her heart and mind desires if she helps them uncover something buried beneath the city of Whitestone. Something only her unique talents and lack of morals can help them uncover. After manipulating their way into the home of the De Rolo family, Ripley finds a kinship with their clever son Percy as she researches the ziggurat.
Ripley finds herself a witness to and participant in the slaughter of the family leaving only the eldest son and daughter alive. As months go by, she both tortures and admires the boy in her charge as she discovers the secrets buried beneath Whitestone. Secrets that will lead to a world filled with anger, revenge, distrust and ultimately betrayal.
The Story: I am a huge fan of Marieke Nijkamp’s work and this story does an amazing job of fleshing out the world of this character, giving the reader a look into her motivations and making her a more intriguing, complicated person in the process. It’s a fantastic story filled with amazing action, thrills and the kind of world building that I love from the world of Critical Role. Every moment is worth the read and adds many great character moments for Ripley and the rest of the characters.
The Art: Tyler Walpole perfectly captures the world of the story and the emotions of the characters within it. The art is beautifully detailed and does an amazing job of elevating the look and feel of the animated series.
