ABC Network President Confident of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Renewal Prospects

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has seen a surge in its viewership with the Ghost Rider storyline they introduced at the beginning of season four. As they begin the second half of the fourth season, there is news that there may be a fifth season announced soon.

When the series was announced for its fourth season, there was speculation among many that the show was on its last legs when it was moved from its traditional 10pm time slot to 9pm. This is usually a signal that a show is in trouble and that the network is allowing that show to fade away gracefully. The non-renewal of Marvel’s Agent Carter further fueled speculation that Marvel television was shifting from broadcast channels so that they can solely focus on their highly successful Netflix series like Daredevil and Luke Cage. Many fans were holding out hope that the audience would remain for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., allowing it to get a fifth season.

With the recently announced Inhumans series in the works for the network and John Ridley’s mystery Marvel project getting press, Entertainment Weekly asked ABC Entertainment Group president Channing Dungey about the prospects of continuing S.H.I.E.L.D. as a series. She replied.

“Absolutely. I’m very bullish on S.H.I.E.L.D. and we’re also really excited about our production with Marvel, ABC Studios, and IMAX, which we are working on for next fall as well.”

So the prospect of a fifth season of the series looks good, but the second half of the season could determine its final fate.
