The Rundown: A group of adventurers seek a dangerous magical item and get more than they bargained for in the process.

A young woman emerges from the wreckage of a tense battle at the gates of a castle where she and a group of adventurers on their way to the same location find similar letters explaining that the recent mage who lived in the castle has died and left a fortune in both treasure and magical items. When the team meets with the young woman named Tilli, they decide to work together to split the spoils they find.

As they explore the castle, one of the party falls to a Mind Flayer who offers to help them. They find everything from a baby Beholder to a sentient gelatinous cube. As they discover the dead mage, secrets are revealed, traps are set and the dark creatures living in the castle band together for a new mission, freedom.

The Story: Hastings crafts a thrilling, entertaining and often humorous story in this first issue. I really like the premise of the story and the twists and turns it takes as characters are revealed and motivations are uncovered. There are a couple of moments that felt a little rushed and a death that seemingly has no consequences to anyone involved, but the story is enjoyable and I look forward to seeing where it goes next.

The Art: Medri creates some beautifully detailed and visually exciting moments throughout the issue. I really love the character designs and the environments within the story.
