Tom Cruise is already on board to star in the upcoming sequel to the hit 1986 film Top Gun and now there’s news that another member of the original cast is returning for the upcoming sequel.

Val Kilmer will be joining the film Top Gun: Maverick and reprising his role as ace fighter pilot Tom Kazansky aka “Iceman”. Iceman and Cruise’s Maverick were rivals aviators in the first film who become friends after an epic final fight against a group of Russian MIG’s.

Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski will helm the sequel which was originally directed by Tony Scott. According to reports, the new film will deal with a world where drone technology is making the old style of flying obsolete and the fighter pilots who are ready to prove them wrong.

Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the Tony Scott-directed original, is producing Maverick with Cruise as well as Skydance’s David Ellison. German composer Harold Faltermeyer, who created Top Gun‘s memorable synth score, is also returning to the production.

Top Gun: Maverick is expected to be released July 12, 2019.
