New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers released Peter Jackson’s adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy in the early 2000’s and the films have collectively earned billions at the box office.

Variety is reporting exclusively that Warner Brothers has teamed with the Tolkien estate on a new series based on Tolkien’s works. The studio is meeting with several networks, but it looks like Amazon Studios might be the frontrunner in getting the series made as well as being the network to air it. The potential revenue for a Lord of the Rings television series seems to have attracted Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos into the negotiations personally.

Bezos is looking for more genre programming for the network to balance their current programming like Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent. The fact that the Tolkien Estate and Warner Brothers are shopping a Lord of the Rings series indicates that both sides are working together again after settling a lawsuit over the character likenesses being used on online slot machines and other media not sanctioned by the estate.
