The Twilight Zone
CBS All Access
Season 2 Episode 6
An international arctic research team discovers a new species among the ice. One that has plans for the human race.
A team of researchers live together in an arctic base studying a previously unknown species of octopus. When two of the researchers are attacked and pulled into the water, the team is in turmoil as they hunt for their teammates and quarantine the creature they believe responsible. To make matters worse, the creature itself seems to not only understand them, but is actively studying them for its own purposes.
As the survivors decide how best to exploit their find, one of the scientists has her own agenda. When the creature escapes and causes more death and destruction, the team discovers that they aren’t the only ones conducting research.
There are some entertaining elements in this episode. There are moments that hearken back to classic sci-fi films like The Thing and others, but the creature itself is underwhelming. It never feels particularly menacing and most of its acts of sabotage and escape count more on the ineptitude of the researchers than any innate cleverness on its part.
While there are a couple of great visual moments, the story was a little flat and the ending not surprising either in its reveal or its consequences. The biggest problem I had with the story was that I expected more from the creature than what I got and with a one hour run time, the writers had the time to make it compelling.
