The Fletching & Moondrop Traveling Carnival of Curiosities
Mollymauk Tealeaf introduces a dangerous new act to attract customers to his failing carnival. Amidst the attractions, Beau meets her clandestine informant, Jester shows Fjord how to have fun, and Caleb and Nott try to steal a rare magical component.
The third episode of this first season begins with terror and thrills as it introduces the viewer to the next member of the Mighty Nein, Mollymauk Tealeaf, played by Taliesin Jaffe. Mollymauk is a member of a traveling carnival and oozes a hedonistic charm that makes him instantly memorable and interesting. I love seeing his relationship with the other members of the carnival and how he effortlessly nonchalant.
The other characters begin to emerge in the area with Beau being her usual charming self, while Caleb and Nott go over their next scam. I really liked the scene between them because it shows them growing in their friendship as Caleb sees Nott dealing anxiety and not having alcohol to settle her nerves. There is also a vulnerability in Nott in that moment that speaks to something deeper with the character.
I continue to be impressed and amazed by the animation in this series and this episode especially. There are some beautifully detailed backgrounds that draw you into the world as well as awesome character moments and amazing action.
Jester and Fjord grow closer as she tries to help him find some fun in his life. I really enjoyed the sequence between the two of them. Caleb and Nott attempt to steal a much-needed component but someone from his past will spook Caleb. I liked that sequence a lot and the heightened tension it conveys. I also really like the moment between Beau and Mollymauk and the verbal clash they have as Molly uses the cards to figure out more about Beau.
The episode proceeds to bring the characters together through their separate circumstances and force them to confront whether they are heroes when an event that threatens everyone at the carnival begins to unfold. The sequence beautifully bookends the action in the beginning of the episode and shows the characters using their skills to end a threat they had a hand in causing. The episode is wonderfully paced, action packed and serves as a great way to concentrate on the characters outside of the bigger events happening around them. A truly fun, engaging and entertaining episode.
