The Coronation

Doty, take this down. We’ve gathered in a mountain village for a ceremony. The food is mediocre and my fellow adventurers haven’t spoken in a year. Uninvited guests crash the party. Rude. Doty, note that I handled it with grace.

Part of Keyleth’s journey has come to an end and that event will bring the members of Vox Machina back together again to be with her. The story takes us back to Zephrah and there definitely come awkward energy among the team as they try to put on happy faces in front of each other while also dealing with the reality of what they are investigating.

There is an ominous series of moments that play out from the last moment of the previous episode and Vax (Liam O’Brien) is at the center of the biggest one as he is reminded that he cannot escape his fate and his commitment to being the champion of the Matron of Ravens. I loved seeing that emotional shift for the character after getting a taste of happiness with Keyleth and it definitely foreshadows event to come both in this episode and the season itself.

The awkward reunion between the members of Vox Machina is fun and frustrating to watch as the characters refuse to acknowledge the elephant in the room and two returning characters do amazing jobs of summing up my feelings as a viewer and fan. There is a great reunion between the twins and Keyleth coms into her own as a character in a huge way before tragedy strikes in the form of an attack on Zephrah.

The animation in this episode is beautifully done both in the lush and brilliantly detailed environments as well as the characters. I absolutely love the look of this episode as well as the amazing action when the attack begins. There are definitely some fun and funny moments as Taryon tries to make himself useful and incurs the wrath of Percy in the process.

The episode brings all the character elements together in a great way that showcases how great this team works together both in triumph and tragedy as events lead to a revelation that will move things down a darker path for the heroes, especially Keyleth and Vax.

Episode 3 starts the ball rolling on the bigger mystery at hand for the characters and does so with moments of terror, triumph, loss and revelation. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
