Season 1 Episode 6

‘Two Storms’

As the surviving Crain siblings come together the night before Nellie’s funeral, their father Hugh finally arrives. A storm rages outside as Luke finds it hard to deal with seeing his twin sister’s body. The rest of the siblings start to get drunk as they deal with the loss and each other.

When Hugh finally arrives, he begins to fill in the blanks of many parts of the kids stories. It’s a great transition from the funeral home back to Hill House. I loved how seamless it was like Hugh can never escape the house himself, no matter where he is.

In the past, another storm rages and it becomes so violent that it knocks out the power. In the darkness, Nellie disappears. In the present Hugh recalls stories about Nell as well as reveal details that fill in many of the blanks of the kid’s recollections. The episode is relatively slow because it deals with the real emotions of loss that the adult siblings are feeling. Steve’s emotions are raw and he wants answers from his evasive father. Luke is barely holding it together. Shirley is lashing out at Steve for his book and Theo is tired of all the secrets and lies.

The episode also brings all of the adult sibling’s secrets to the surface and further brings them to a dark place. All the while, Nellie’s ghost watches them, unable to stop what’s coming. When power goes out in the funeral home, things get worse for everyone and Theo has a terrifying vision of her mother.

While this episode isn’t as impactful as the previous one, it does do a really great job of setting up the story to come and bringing out the secrets that are haunting the Crain children as adults.
