The Rundown: A writer finds himself trapped in the fantasy world of his favorite author.
In a sprawling English manor, a writer looks upon a young girl frozen behind glass and writes the last chapters of his story before taking his own life. In the present, writer and professor Hector Ramirez is called into a meeting with his fiancé/manager to meet with famous writer Deborah Luckwell who wants him to write a new series of stories with her based on the works of E.L. Vossler.
After agreeing, he picks up his child Al and the pair travel to the estate to stay and look through the author’s notes and papers. Unfortunately, a dark presence stalks them. A presence with a connection to Luckwell and seems to be targeting fans of Vossler’s work. After finding a hidden room in the author’s home, both Hector and Al disappear only for Hector to wake up in the fantasy world of his favorite author.
The Story: Barberie crafts an engaging and entertaining story in this first issue. The story hits all the marks in engaging the reader with interesting characters, a great mystery and horror elements that are well executed. I enjoyed the world building in this first issue, the character conflicts and how the mystery at the beginning of the story seeps into the present. I look forward to following this tale and seeing where it takes me next.
The Art: Beem creates some beautifully detailed and emotionally engaging art throughout the issue. I love the visual style of the issue and the character designs a lot.
