Superman & Lois

The CW

Season 1 Episode 6

Broken Trust

Superman & Lois returns right where the last episode left off with Jordan being confronted by his former classmate Tag after escaping from the facility he’s being held in after manifesting his powers. What follows is some great Superman action as he chases the young man and has to stop a train crash mid-pursuit. It’s another great sequence that seems to follow a formula for the series where it reminds us of the Superman of it all before getting into the family drama.

Morgan Edge is keeping his promise and preparing to open the mine, giving the people of Smallville including Lana, new opportunities. Luthor decides to keep close to Lois as she continues her investigation and he plays to her competitive spirit. At the same time, the boys return to school, but Jordan is starting to manifest another power as he becomes ultra sensitive to loud noises. I like how the episode and series are playing with the concept of love triangles. The Clark/Lana, Lois/Luthor and Jordan/John/Sarah dynamics are making for some interesting drama.

Lois finds getting help, even from the people she trusts in the town is a hard prospect when so many people in the town are hurting for work and Clark decides to continue Jordan’s training the same way his father helped him. Sam informs Clark that Tag is in Metropolis and Sarah decides to do something nice for her mom in the wake of their tension. It’s a nice scene that moves past the angsty teenager trope.

While Clark and the boys are in Metropolis for a football game, Lois finds it harder and harder to find a way into the mines. Luthor arrives in “knight in shining armor” with exactly what she needs and the two find themselves sneaking into the mine to get information. Tag returns and goes after Sarah for help, but ends up hurting her instead. Lana and her husband come to an understanding after a night out and Clark gets to the bottom of what is happening to Jordan. His motivations for lying to his father are a little cheesy and unnecessary to be honest, but it does the job of moving the plot forward.

The climax of the episode falls on two fronts as Lois finds herself facing Edge’s assistant and her Kryptonian powers while Superman scours the city looking for the missing Sarah and Tag. Luthor’s way of handling things raises suspicion in Lois which was great to see. I love that Lois has the agency to be the investigator that she is. The Superman showdown with Tag reveals some information that casts suspicion on Sam Lane. A scene that is filled with tension and played well.

The latest episode of Superman & Lois does some great work to evolve the character relationships as well as the bigger story. I was impressed with this episode and everything in it.
