The Rundown: A prison break and the government’s response will send a group of supervillains straight towards Malcolm and his family.

With Angel recuperating from her injuries in the hospital, Malcolm makes the decision to help her the only way he can. At the same time, a prison break in Chicago will free the Vicious Circle and scatter them throughout the city. With the government deciding to gas the city and take away everyone’s superpowers, the villains decide to go on the run and leave the city. Unfortunately, their escape will send them straight to Canada.

While Angel recovers, she is reunited with Frank who has an important question to ask her. Malcolm and Maxine find their alone time interrupted by some old friends and when the villains make their bloody border crossing, Malcolm is called in to stop them.

The Story: Erik Larsen is building to something big in this issue. All of the characters are given interesting and meaningful stakes in this story and the setup for their world being rocked is apparent and well executed. There are some fun moments throughout the issue and the character moments are all done well. From Angel’s life changing decision to Maxine’s tension filled story time with her daughter, the story delivers on all the plot points that have been building throughout the series.

The Art: Larsen adds some finely crafted details to many of the panels in this issue. The splash page prison break looks great, but the moments between the characters are what really shine. Angel and Frank having dinner and Malcolm and Maxine talking to the doctor are drawn beautifully and I loved the details in each panel.
