After a rocky first season and a second that seemed to show the character hitting his stride, Netflix has announced that they will not be producing a third season of Marvel’s Iron Fist.

This is the first actual cancellation for the overall critically acclaimed Marvel shows on Netflix. Iron Fist was not the highest rated Marvel series out of the group, but the second season was a marked improvement and created some interesting character and plot points that many thought would be explored in a third season of the series.

Sadly, that won’t be happening on Netflix.

Many are speculating that the series might find a new home on the upcoming Disney streaming service which has recently announced shows focused on the MCU movie characters like Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Elizabeth Olson’s Scarlet Witch. Others believe that the move might be making the way for a Daughters of the Dragon series because of the character’s prominence in the second season. There is also speculation that a Heroes for Hire style series starring Iron Fist star Finn Jones and Luke Cage’s Mike Colter might be in development to offset not bringing back The Defenders.

To their credit, Netflix is not saying that the end of the series is not the end of Iron Fist, but it is disappointing for those who watched the second season and were optimistic about where it was going next.
