Miles Morales has been inspired to keep a journal and he uses it to write about the new, strange set of circumstances he finds himself in.

For anyone uninitiated to who Miles Morales is and how he became Spider-Man, Miles’ journal gives a brief synopsis of his home life, his family and the circumstances that lead to his parents discovering he was a superhero. It adds an additional dimension to Miles’ story that most heroes don’t enjoy and makes his family an intricate part of his journey.

Miles’ life is becoming more hectic with school, friends and being a hero. He is becoming more fatigued as the days go and his inability to find balance is causing him issues in both his social and academic lives. When his spider sense warns him of a robbery in progress, Miles springs into action to stop the thieves and runs into Rhino.

The villain tells Miles to leave, but the two of them start to fight with Miles’ fatigue starting to show. When they put their differences aside to stop the thieves, Miles discovers something about one of them that hits close to home.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable first issue that does a great job of being a jumping off point for anyone unaware of Miles Morales’ history. Ahmed does a great job of weaving together interesting looks at Miles’ home life, school life and even romantic interests. Nothing feels unnecessary and there is a rhythm to the pace of this story that made it fun to read more than once.

Javier Garron’s art in this issue is amazing. All of the characters look great. Miles looks awesome in the action scenes in costume and his fight with Rhino was brilliantly done. A well done first issue.
