The beloved nanny from PL Travers bestselling children’s book Mary Poppins returns to the big screen this year just in time for the holidays.
There have been 9 Mary Poppins books published over the years, including the original 1934 story and Disney is bringing back the magical nanny for a new generation. “Mary Poppins Returns” is drawn from the other amazing stories by Travers and takes place in depression-era London. Twenty-four years after the original story, Poppins returns to help the now adult Banks children and Michael’s children after a personal loss.
According to the official synopsis from Disney:
Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train, Into the Woods) stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, Moana) plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light – and life – to the streets of London.
Mary Poppins Returns also stars Ben Whishaw (Spectre) and Emily Mortimer (The Newsroom) as the adult Banks children Michael and Jane. Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Golden Circle) stars as the head of Fidelity Fiduciary and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) as Mary Poppins cousin eccentric cousin Topsy. Rounding out the cast are Angela Landsbury (Beauty and the Beast) as the Balloon Lady from the Travers novels and Dick Van Dyke (Mary Poppins) as Mr. Dawes Jr, retired chairman of the bank.
Mary Poppins Returns opens in theaters December 25, 2018.
