The Rundown: Nightwing will lead a new League through the Metalverse and run into a familiar face.

Detective Chimp is alone in Slaughter Swamp and surrounded by a bunch of Creeper’s riding Grundys. Getting prepared to go down fighting, he is rescued by a different kind of Justice League. Led by Nightwing, the new League takes on the walking nightmares in order to rescue Chimp and recruit him to help them find Perpetua’s throne.

Emboldened by Wonder Woman’s plan, the team makes their way to the ruins of the Hall of Justice. When they arrive, they are greeted by none other than Lex Luthor who decides the best way to stop what’s happening is to help the heroes free his former team. Unfortunately, the throne is guarded by two of the most powerful and deadliest Dark Multiverse Batmen yet.

The Story: Joshua Williamson takes us into the Metalverse with this issue and showcases more of the devastated Earth reshaped by Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs. The story is interesting and entertaining. Williamson chooses not only an interesting group of heroes, but the inclusion of both Detective Chimp and Lex Luthor was great. Chimp’s cynicism serves the story perfectly and he reflects the tone of the series and the heroes who have accepted the new world they find themselves in. There is a lot of great action throughout the story and I really enjoyed the cliffhanger at the end of the issue.

The Art: Xermanico delivers some truly breathtaking art in this issue. Everything from the backgrounds to the characters look great. The Slaughter Swamp interlude is fantastic, but the first few pages showing Robin’s view of the League are some of the best I’ve seen recently.
