Season 1 Episode 3
Who You calling Ugly?
Official Description – Mark has to cut a study date short to help save Mount Rushmore from a crazed scientist. Robot deals with Action-Comic as he assembles a new team of world-saving superheroes.
The episode opens with a televised funeral. The world is in mourning as Omni-Man delivers an impassioned speech. The Grayson family and several acquaintances then attend a private funeral where several pertinent interactions take place.
Back at home, we see that Mark is having difficulty dealing with the recent tragedy. He decides to contact a friend after receiving some helpful advice. It is then revealed that the Grayson’s may have an unexpected enemy.
Later, Eve, also an attendee of the funeral, returns to Teen Team HQ and makes a heartbreaking discovery. Despite this, she goes to a special tryout being held by the GDA. Mark is also at the event, but only as a spectator.
Several new heroes are introduced, including Monster Girl. The winners of the event include several of Mark’s acquaintance. Robot and Monster Girl learn more about each other, and Robot makes a surprising allusion to his character.
Mark takes advice from William regarding a love interest. Later, while on a study date, Mark is interrupted by a Cecil Stedman. He then goes on a mission with Eve to save a National Monument. Afterwards, Mark tries to make amends for his unexpected disappearance.
Meanwhile, Omni-Man also returns from a mission. We later discover that he behaved uncharacteristically with a foe. This cause further speculation in regards to his character.
Eve meets with Rex to discuss recent events. When the conversation goes south, she goes to visit Mark, but he is busy. Eve is left to consider her next steps.
In the final act, The Mauler Twins escape from prison. While on the run, they receive help from an unexpected source. Then an act of violence leads to a tragedy. The episode ends with an unexpected conversation that hits at darker happenings.
The episodes get better and better as the story progresses. The hints at a larger narrative are more pronounced in this episode. Especially as we see Cecil take on the position of puppet master. I’m excited to see how all the disparate characters fit together.
Although this was an episode filled with multiple storylines, I fixated on the relationship between Omni-Man and Debbie. I want to know more about their dynamic. As the tension mounts, I am interested in how much Debbie either knows or suspects of her husband’s behavior. I also want to know how the two will interact when all of his secrets are revealed. I’m looking forward to the next episode.
