The Rundown: Jessica Harrow’s time as a reaper is complicated by a wayward soul.
Jessica Harrow comes to claim a soul after an accident. On their journey, Jessica and Bryan have a long conversation. Once they arrive at the afterlife, she leaves her Bryan to his fate. As she enters a mysterious location, she discovers a valuable object has gone missing. Soon, she and two fellow reapers journey to New York City to retrieve the item. After another encounter with Bryan, Jessica quickly discovers something unexpected. Finally, Adira is alerted to an unprecedented event.
The Story: There are so many good things happening in the entry chapter of this fascinating series. Phillips brilliantly spins a captivating narrative filled with both humor and melancholy. I found this exploration of the afterlife refreshing, and the 70’s rock references sublime. I would be remiss if I didn’t point out the opening lyrics are from Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper.” And I would be less than honest if I didn’t add that I read the first section of this issue while listening to said track. I’m already invested in this story, and I am excited to find out what happens next.
The Art: This issue uses a modern styling with intense colorwork that changes based on location and mood. The illustration pays careful attention to both character and surroundings using detailed drawings to capture the emotional quality of a scene. Overall, I found this issue to be well done and transportive.
