Octavia Butler’s Hugo Award winning 1979 novel is coming to the Disney-owned channel FX with a series order.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Butler’s acclaimed novel Kindred will has been given a series order from FX Productions after ordering a pilot for the series in March of 2021.

The pilot was directed by Janicza Bravo and the series stars Mallori Johnson, Micah Stock, Ryan Kwanten, Gayle Rankin, Austin Smith, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy and David Alexander Kaplan.

Kindred tells the story of aspiring writer Dana who rejects her familial obligations and moves to Los Angeles to forge her own path. Before settling into her new home, she finds herself being violently yanked back and forth through time to a 19th century plantation with a link to her family and their past. She must navigate through past and present to confront a secret that runs through her blood.

The series showrunner and writer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins served as a producer on HBO’s hit Watchmen adaptation.

“Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has done a phenomenal job of adapting Kindred for FX and honoring the legacy and timeless value of Octavia Butler’s groundbreaking novel,” said Nick Grad, president original programming at FX. “The pilot directed by Janicza Bravo is brilliant, and we can’t wait to resume production with this incredibly talented and dedicated cast.”
