Unbreakable was a unique take on the superhero origin story when it was released in theaters in 2000. The upcoming sequel will see the return of the film’s villain in the title role.

Unbreakable tells the story of David Dunn, an ordinary man who discovers that he has superhuman abilities including invulnerability to harm, superhuman strength and stamina and the ability to see crimes being committed by people he’s touched. David finds out about his abilites through spending time with and being mentored by comic book store owner Elijah Prince, who turns out to be the villainous Mr Glass.

In 2016, writer/director M. Night Shyamalan released the film Split, which featured the character of Kevin Wendell Crumb, who suffers from a dissociative disorder that culminates in the creation of 23 distinct personalities that he uses to kidnap and terrorize three teenage girls. At the end of the film Dunn makes an appearance as he is in pursuit of Crumb.

Glass will be the third film in this loose trilogy and will include Bruce Willis returning as David Dunn, Jamess McAvoy returning as Crumb and Samuel L Jackson returning as Mr. Glass. The first photo of Jackson on the set of the film shows him in what looks like similar clothes to what he wore in the original film. Whether or not Glass has some relationship in the film to Crumb remains to be seen.

Glass is slated to be released January 18, 2019.
