DreamWorks is working on several projects that would bring new animated series to the streaming service Netflix in the next two years. Besides a Trolls and Boss Baby series coming, a new title was announced that hits all the retro-80’s triggers for me.

Eisner Award Winning writer Noelle Stevenson (Lumberjanes) will both executive produce and serve as showrunner for a new take on the 80’s hero She-Ra. The series is being described as  a modern take on the ‘80s girl power icon for a new generation of young fans. The trailblazing property originally debuted in 1985 to satisfy demand for a female-led fantasy series. The series is described as an epic and timely tale that celebrates female friendship and empowerment, led by a warrior princess tailor made for today. The series will be available to Netflix members worldwide in 2018.

Traditionally portrayed as He-Man’s twin sister, it is interesting and refreshing that She-Ra will take the lead in a series without news of a He-Man series also in development. This should give Stevenson the time and freedom to develop a unique and powerful take on the hero as well as her supporting cast.
