Frank stands face to face with a fully grown Thanos wearing his Punisher skull and calling him father. When baby Thanos asks who it is, Frank immediately realizes that this version of Thanos is the one that he raises, the new Punisher. Reluctantly, he and baby Thanos decide to follow Punisher Thanos into the collapsing portal so Frank can see the hell he knows he had a hand in creating.
What he discovers on the other side of the portal is a paradise. As he marvels at the world that he and Thanos have created, he sees the underbelly of paradise and the realization that no matter what he does, Thanos will always become a despotic villain. Confronted with the realization that nothing that he does will change anything, Frank snaps. When another revelation shakes Frank to his core, he makes a decision that could take him back to his previous role.
Cates continues to do some really interesting and insane things in this series. The story in this issue is deeper than some of the others, but it still maintains the craziness and humor that have made this series so good. The unpredictability of this story is one of the things that continues to draw me to each issue and I want to see what strange directions Cates will takes this story next. One of the other virtues of this series is that Cates has managed to flesh out Frank Castle more and give him personality elements that make him more believable as a person.
Burnett has some great art in this issue. I was blown away by the contrast in what Thanos shows Frank and what he discovers on his own. It was a stark contrast that worked on a visual and visceral level. I continue to be a fan of this series and can’t wait to see what happens next.
