CBS Access has confirmed two new pieces of casting news and confirmed information regarding another lead characters role.
There has been scarce information coming from CBS regarding the status of their newest entry into the Star Trek universe so fans have been speculating for months about the direction of the show including the plot and the characters. CBS has made a casting announcement last week that Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) would be joining the cast. Many people speculated on what role she would play, but it has been confirmed that the actress will be playing Captain Georgiou, commanding officer of the starship Shenzou.
Joining the show, set to debut in May 2017 will be Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp.
Doug Jones played the character of Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films as well as The Ancient on the FX series The Strain. Jones will be coming on board as Lt. Saru, a Starfleet science officer from a species new to the Star Trek universe.
Anthony Rapp originated the role of Marc Cohen in the Broadway production of Rent and reprised the role in the film version. He will be playing Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert and science officer. He will also be the first conceived gay character in the Star Trek lexicon.
The pilot episode of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on CBS with the remaining episodes airing on the networks pay service CBS Access.
