The Rundown: Cable’s attempts to save the woman he loves will create the monster who wants him dead.

Avery is dying on a hospital bed and Cable is distraught angry and determined to change fate. Traveling back in time, he finds himself unable to stop the attack that kills Avery no matter how many attempts he makes. Undeterred, Cable decides to try something else, he goes back to talk to Avery about how she contracted the techno-organic virus and rushes back in time to stop it from happening.
After repeated failed attempts to save Avery, he finally succeeds and discovers that his initial trip through time after fighting Cicada brings the instrument of Avery’s misfortune to the future. As he returns to her in the hospital to find a way to stabilize him, Cable will discover too late that he has made things infinitely worse for everyone, especially Avery.
The Story: Pepose crafts a thrilling, intense and tragic story in this issue. He masterfully uses Cable’s grit and determination to create tragedy for the character while also leaning into the things that make him a hero. I had an inkling at the start of the series where it was going with the dynamic between Cable and Cicada and I enjoyed how this issue leaned into the circumstances that created the character as well as making me excited to see what happens next between them.
The Art: Henderson delivers great art and visual thrills throughout the issue. The imagery is as intense and tragic as the story itself.
