In what is known in the industry as a precursor to the Academy Awards, Black Panther has won the marquee award with the top prize at the 25th Annual SAG Awards. Black Panther won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and the entire cast of the film including stars Chadwick Boseman, Angela Bassett and Michael B Jordan made their way to the stage to accept the honor.

The film, which grossed 1.35 billion dollars this year, is also up for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman gave a speech at the auditorium and touched on the upcoming sequel stating  “you can’t have a Black Panther now without a ‘two’ on it.” . The award wraps up an impressive year for the Disney / Marvel Studios film which has become a cultural phenomenon.

This is the first time a superhero film has taken the top prize and hopefully it won’t be the last as the motion picture industry finds itself at the start of a new dynamic that sees popular movies and comic book movies as art worthy of recognition for the achievements of the men and women who work so hard on them.
