Actor Stephen Furst died June 16, 2017 from complications due to diabetes according to his son Nathan Furst. “Over the last several years it was getting worse a little bit. Sort of the typical things that tend to happen when you have diabetes a long time.”

Flounder-Stephen-Furst

My first memories of Stephen Furst were in the movie Animal House where he played to lovable loser Flounder. He had an infectious smile and an off-beat charm that he brought to the role.

Although I was a kid when the show originally aired, I do remember seeing him on episodes of St. Elsewhere. My mom was a huge fan of the show and watched it whenever it aired. (I’m sure a lot of it had to do with Denzel Washington). Furst was also funny and charming on that series as well and brought some levity to the seriousness of the drama.

Most of my memories of Stephen Furst are from his five years as Vir Cotto on the television series Babylon 5. I was a fan of his everyman character from the beginning. He personified on the show a person trying to be good in a world of moral compromise. The Centauri was never the hero of the series, but he also played a significant role in the events that he found himself in. All of that was conveyed in Stephen Furst’s performance. He will be missed.
