Aquaman is set to return to theaters with an upcoming sequel to the hit comic book film.

Aquaman has become a smash hit for Warner Brothers and DC Films so a sequel was never really in doubt. The James Wan directed film grossed more than $1.14 billion dollars worldwide and counting. Warner Brothers has now set a release date for the sequel.

David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the first film, is back for the sequel. Jason Mamoa is set to return in the title role and James Wan will return to produce the film along with Peter Safran. Wan has not officially been named the director of the upcoming sequel, but there is little doubt that a deal will be made soon. Both Wan and Safran are producing a horror themes spinoff film, The Trench, based on the creatures featured in the first film.

The official release date for the Aquaman sequel is December 16, 2022.
