So you want to dive into the world of Dungeons & Dragons but you don’t know where to start? Well, here is a short introduction to some of the things that you need to begin your own TTRPG adventure with your friends and family.
There are several different types of TTRPG’s (table top role playing games) with various styles, themes, lore and locations to create your stories within and many different ways to play. But if you’re looking to get started with the world of DnD, I have some helpful items that will allow you to create your own adventure.
Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Player’s Handbook (D&D Core Rulebook)
This is the grail for anyone starting off as a player in the game. This tome offers the essentials to new and existing players with character builds including classes, subclasses, species and more. It tells you what kind of features you can utilize as whatever class you play from wizard spells to monk combat moves. It also shows you how to create your character sheet while also inspiring you in the creation of your characters backstory, personality and more.
Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide (D&D Core Rulebook)
If you plan on being the DM (Dungeon Master) of your first campaign or One-Shot, you’re going to need to know the rules. The Dungeon Master’s Guide is filled with useful tools and advice for seasoned veterans and new DM’s alike. Learn the mechanics of the game and get inspired to either create your own adventure or successfully run one that already exists. Filled with great resources that help you learn the rules and ultimately how to engage your players.
Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Monster Manual (D&D Core Rulebook)
What’s a Dungeons & Dragons campaign without epic encounters with dangerous creatures? Nothing. That’s why the Monster Manual is filled with a variety of assorted magical and menacing creatures from fierce dragons to cunning mind flayers. The Monster Manual includes over 500 unique creatures including new threats that will have your players shaking at the table in fear.
Dungeon Master Screen
Every Dungeon Master needs a way to not only keep track of the adventure they are creating, but also a means of keeping things mysterious and interesting for their characters. This DM screen not only looks amazing, but it also comes with pockets to keep your campaign notes handy as well as organize your adventure with rule sheets that allow for quick reference for DM’s of any level.
D&D Dice Tray
The most important equipment you will need for your first Dungeons & Dragons adventure is the dice. The dice in D&D help to determine how your roll and role in the story affect both the story itself and your fellow players. A good dice tray is essential not only to make sure your dice don’t fly all over the table, but also to enhance the aesthetic of any D&D game. You want one that can not only hold the dice you aren’t playing, but also have enough space to roll the ones you are.
Dungeons & Dragons Dice Set
If you’ve ever watched shows like Dimension 20 or Critical Role, then you’ve heard terms like “D20” or “D8”. These refer to the dice you will be using throughout the game to determine if your choices result in success or failure and if an attack you land deals enough damage to keep you and your party alive and adventuring. You’re going to want a good set of dice and, if you’re like me, you’re going to want more than one. The wand might choose the wizard, but the player definitely chooses the dice.
So this is a short list of essentials that both new players and veterans to the world of Dungeons & Dragons will need to have for their first or next campaign. What are some items that you find essential as either a player or DM for your TTRPG’s? Let me know in the comments.
