We Are His Blood

Doty, take this down. Jumbo is telling us a very old, very alarming story. Short Stuff visits family in a quaint town, but something feels…off. A friendly stranger seems a bit too friendly. I have a bad feeling about this one.

Grog (Travis Willingham), of all people, recounts the story of the Whispered One and his banishing from the realm with the help of the prime deities. It’s a fun moment that allows Travis to infuse Grog with a level of gravitas that the character normally doesn’t exhibit. It also allows for a fun contrast when that moment finally ends.

As the team contemplates what to do next and Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) gets an idea, Pike (Ashley Johnson) decides that she and Grog need to return to Westrun to pay a visit to someone close to the Cleric who might have answers regarding one of the champions. It’s a fun and lighthearted moment that brings back a beloved character who seems to be living a new and interesting life. Her conversation with this person reveals what’s been going on in the town as well as some trepidation about diving into the past. Both moments showcase many of the themes of this season and are executed extremely well.

Percy gets an idea regarding the orb and proceeds to begin a new and dangerous experiment while Vex (Laura Bailey) confronts Keyleth (Marisha Ray) about the secret they kept from her. It’s a great scene that contrasts both the start of the new friendship between Percy and Taryon as well as longstanding one between Vex and Keyleth.

Back in Westrrun, Pike finds herself learning about the changes in the town and community being created around a new spiritual leader who has brought the people together. I am not going to spoil who it is, but the voice is unmistakable and the scene where he speaks to the gathered people of the town is exactly the dark and ominous tone I was looking for from the title of the episode. It leads to a confrontation I wasn’t expecting and a danger the characters are not prepared to face when it hits so close to home.

While there are still great moments throughout from Taryon proving to be more useful than anyone imagined to Keyleth and Vex having a personal moment, the episode takes a dark turn in the middle that once again reminds the audience that no one is safe, especially not characters that we have grown to love in the series. I was not expecting what happened in this episode and I love being surprised and shocked by the places this team is willing to go for the sake of the story.

The episode ends in tragedy as well as knowledge. I was shocked by the final moments of the episode as well as the revelations at the end and this episode was definitely a highlight of the season bringing together so many different character and story elements and brilliantly blending them together into something sad, thrilling, exciting and unexpected.
