Kitty Pryde and Piotr are dealing with the fact that they have set a wedding date but are still having bouts of cold feet about walking down the aisle. At the same time, the team is concentrating on trying to find and take down Mesmero in South America. Gambit has been tracking the mutant for some time and it’s nice to see him in this issue as part of the team. The maturity shown in how the team handles the Mesmero situation is juxtaposed against the first meeting between a young Kitty Pryde and Colossus. It’s a sweet moment, but that’s as close as you really get to the deep relationship stuff in this issue.

The rest of the issue deals with Kitty confronting blatant racism, a plan being hatched on the Savage Land by Alpha and Kurt taking Peter and the rest of the team for Vegas for a Bachelor Party that does not end well.

Peter’s journey in this issue doesn’t add a whole lot. I never really got the sense that there were any real personal obstacles keeping the two of them from getting married. A lot of it seemed like an artificial excuse to get him to Vegas and ultimately to what happens to him when he’s separated from the rest of the group. A lot of it seemed artificial. Like it was all surface and no substance.

Kitty’s journey in the issue was good. It showed her as the leader and advocate that she’s grown up to be and the moment with her mother was well done. Unfortunately, her story suffered from the same problem Peter’s did; there just doesn’t seem to be much conflict between the two of them on a personal level to make drama. It just felt a little bland.

The background conflicts are the more interesting parts of this issue and I wanted to see more of what is going on at the Robert Kelly facility as well as the Savage Land to be honest. Those stories seemed to have more potential for drama than the others.
