The Rundown: The X-Men are called in to investigate a missing monarch.

The Shi’ar Empire is barely holding on to power in the quadrant and their problems will only increase if people discover that the current ruler Xandra is missing. In order to find the young ruler and keep the investigation under the radar, Deathbird contacts the X-Men for help.

When the mutants arrive, Jean discovers that there is a growing sentiment among the population against the royals as a result of the economic issues affecting the empire. Issues that are leading to widespread devastation. Issues that lead to the rise of an active resistence group led by Urr. With the regents life on the line, the X-Men will discover that they are outnumbered, but they will also discover that they are not alone.

The Story: Hickman delivers a good story in this issue. The plot is well done and the dialogue is great. I enjoyed the pace of the plot and where it went thematically. The political elements of the story were well done and I really enjoyed the character interactions.

The Art: Brett Booth’s art is what elevates this story. I loved the classic look of both the art and the characters. The action was fantastic and I loved the retro 90’s look of the characters. There are some great details throughout the issue and the art gives added energy to the story.
