The Rundown: In the wake of a devastating betrayal, Apocalypse prepares for war.

Having made their way back to Krakoa, Apocalypse finds himself teetering on the brink of death. With the resurrection protocols compromised, it will take Magneto, Polaris, Hope and Healer to keep the mutant still so that they can attempt to heal his body. As they heal him, he recounts the events that brought them to this point.

He recounts the tale of how he and his family defended the earth against invaders and how they took that fight to the aggressors in a series of devastating attacks that eventually forced a meeting. A meeting that would change the course of the battle ahead and force them to prepare for a bigger conflict to come. With the knowledge that the mutants and the earth are in for a bigger fight, Apocalypse seeks out the one thing he needs to prepare for the tournament, his sword.

The Story: Jonathan Hickman crafts a stirring and moving story for Apocalypse in this issue. The story gives the mutant layers of inner and interpersonal conflict that make him more interesting as a character while also bringing the reader into what is shaping up to be an unique and interesting conflict for the X-Men and their world. I continue to enjoy the places this story is taking me to as a reader and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.

The Art: Mahmud Asrar delivers some intense and beautifully detailed art throughout this issue. Every page is filled with great details and a dark, ominous tone that matches the mood of the story.
