The latest episode of the Disney Plus series WandaVision delivered one of the biggest surprise endings ever and while everyone is speculating on everything about the show from the significance of the commercial breaks to the living room wallpaper, there are some big implications for what happened at the end of the episode.

SPOILERS!!! IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED EPISODE 5 OF WANDAVISION, COME BACK AND READ THIS AFTER YOU DO!!

Episode 5 of WandaVision brings the viewer back to the world of WandaVision with a trip to the 1980’s and hijinks involving the twin children of Wanda and Vision having some growing pains, literally. The babies decide to age themselves up in the episode twice and that leads to an 80’s style Mike Seaver/ Danny Tanner lecture from their mother about not running away from their feelings when they want her to resurrect their dead dog.

As the episode comes to a close there is a resurrection of sorts. One that has some interesting implications going forward. At the end of the episode, Vision confronts Wanda about his fears and the situation in Westview and Wanda tells him that she doesn’t know this all started. A ring of the doorbell breaks up their marital spat and we are treated to the return of Wanda’s brother Pietro Maximoff. But this is not the Pietro we know from Avengers: Age of Ultron played by Aaron Taylor Johnson.

This version of Pietro Maximoff is the one played by Evan Peters in the Fox X-Men movies. The episode does a brilliant job of having Darcy Lewis comment on the “recasting” of the character, but his presence might have more meaning than just a cameo.

MULTIVERSE MADNESS

It’s already been speculated that WandaVision will serve as a catalyst for introducing the multiverse to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and this is possibly the first step. With WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen reprising her role in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the multiverse is going to become a huge part of this phase of the MCU. That being said, Peters’ Pietro showing up wasn’t something that Wanda planned based on her reaction so it can be assumed that this isn’t some construct, but a version of her brother from another dimension.

Why she felt a kinship with him is another mystery that I cannot wait to see explored.

MUTANT MADNESS

After Disney purchased Fox, Marvel Studios was about to regain the X-Men franchise and its roster of characters. With Peters’ Quicksilver being a mutant and now arriving in the MCU which never mentioned or alluded to them before, Peters version of the character could signify that the mutant side of the Marvel universe is making its way into the MCU. It’s already been confirmed that there will be a third Deadpool movie with the character set in the MCU so the concept of mutants will already be a part of this new phase when that film comes out. So it would stand to reason that bringing mutants into the MCU would be something spearheaded by a powerful being like Wanda and probably without her conscious knowledge.

Both theories could also explain how Wanda ends up in the sequel to Doctor Strange. Either she is the threat that must be stopped by Strange or her grief has been used by someone else to cause a breach in the multiverse that both Strange and Wanda must fight to seal.

I want to know what you think. What are your favorite WandaVision, Pietro or Marvel Phase 4 theories? Let me know in the comments below.
