Looks like the ghost with the most is returning to the big screen with the announcement that Warner Brothers has not only greenlit a sequel to the 1988 Tim Burton directed Beetlejuice, but also announced a release date as well.

According to several sources, including the The Hollywood Reporter and others, Tim Burton is set to return to the director’s chair for the upcoming sequel and will reunite with Wednesday star Jenna Ortega who will be taking the lead role. Burton directed the Wednesday series for Netflix and the new Beetlejuice movie has been penned by Wednesday writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Gough and Millar are the team behind series like Smallville and Into the Badlands among others.

Ortega is set to play the daughter of Lydia Deetz, played by Winona Ryder in the original film. No word on whether Ryder will return for the sequel, but it has been confirmed that Michael Keaton, who played the titular ghost, is set to return.

The long gestating sequel has a release date of September 6, 2024 which would have it competing with Marvel Studios’ Blade film. With Blade delayed because of the current Writer’s Strike, WB could be counting on the delay to move Blade’s release date giving the Beetlejuice sequel the advantage at the box office.
