Malekith begins his end game and his target it Midgard.

On Asgard, the lone figure of Odin stands upon the broken Bifrost. With no gatekeeper to keep watch and no warriors to guard the dying realm, Asgard is the perfect location for Malekith to send assassins to kill the All-Father.

Back on Earth, Thor is interrupted in his lamentations by the sudden, violent appearance of a battered and bloody Loki. Pleading for help, Thor’s brother tells him that Malekith is amassing his forces on Jotunheim and another group of assassins confirm Loki’s theory about removing them from the board. He transports Thor away before Thori can warn the god of thunder.

Having been lured into a trap, Thor finds himself alone fighting against an army of Frost Giants with no way to get home. Which is exactly what Malekith wanted. More assassins go after Thor’s mother and an intervention from Spider-Man helps to stop them as more incursions begin. Heroes from Wolverine to Doctor Strange sense the change as warriors from across the realms descend on New York. Malekith emerges to force the surrender of Midgard and finds the Avengers and others ready to stand in opposition. With Thor trapped and Laufey sending a message to the heroes in the form of his son Loki, the War of the Realms begins.

From the pacing to the dialogue, Jason Aaron knocks it out of the park with this first issue. Malekith’s war across the realms has been one of the more interesting storylines coming from Marvel made more interesting by the fact that it’s been happening on the fringes of other stories. This allows for unexpected twists and turns in the storytelling and that is evident in the Loki/Laufey confrontation. Even the attack on Odin was unexpected and ends with more mystery. I really want to see where this story goes next and how far it reaches.

Russell Dauterman does an amazing job with the art in this issue. Everything looks beautifully detailed and full of motion.
