Universal Pictures has partnered with Amasia Entertainment to develop a new film based on The Green Hornet created by George W Trendle and Fran Striker.

The film, titled The Green Hornet and Kato, is in early development with the studios after what was considered a competitive bidding war. The characters are based on a 30’s radio drama about publisher Britt Reid who splits his time between the newspaper and fighting crime at night as the vigilante The Green Hornet alongside his aide Kato. The pair are both wanted by the police and feared by the criminal underworld as they fight to keep the streets safe with high tech weapons, an array of underworld sources and their supercar the Black Beauty.

The characters moved from the radio to the small screen with the 1966 television series starring Van Williams as Reid and martial arts icon Bruce Lee as Kato. The series only lasted one season, but it is lauded for introducing Lee to American audiences. The characters have flourished in the comics for years with writers like Kevin Smith and others bringing their stories to life for Dynamite Entertainment. In 2011, an action comedy adaptation of the characters starring Seth Rogen and Jay Chou premiered and took over $227 million dollars in box office worldwide.
