On planet Cybertron, a newly forged transformer named Rubble is giddy to be traveling with Bumblebee to a transmission station so that Rubble can learn about Energon.
On their travels, Rubble comes across a strange group of alien scavengers. Thankfully, a passing security bot named Windblade scared them off and she decides to join the group as they head to the station. Windblade and Bumblebee have a past together and both of them tell Rubble about the choice he is going to make.
Orion Pax, the future Optimus Prime, witnesses protests and civil unrest in the streets. In a bid to maintain order, he calls in his friend and leader of the protestors; Megatron. The two debate Megatron’s role with the ascenticons and whether or not his latest speech will incite violence. Their debate does not go as Orion wanted and he must prepare for what comes next.
At the same time, the trio comes to the transmission station and find it abandoned. Unable to find anyone, they split up and Rubble makes a terrifying discovery.
It’s a whole new world for the beloved characters and Brian Ruckley is handling them in an interesting and engaging way. Pitting Megatron and Orion against each other in civil debate showcases the status and stakes of their eventual falling out. Ruckley plants enough seeds in the story to keep the reader interested in how the political divide on the planet will form and spread. The pace kept me engaged as well by not revealing too much too soon and allowing me to come to the ending organically.
The art by Angel Hernandez and Cachet Whitman is amazingly detailed from the characters to the stunning backgrounds. Everything looks vibrant on the page.
