The ill-fated foursome of Mr. Terrific, Metamorpho, Plastic Man and the mysterious Linnya are watching a pre-recorded message from Tom Strong warning them off an impending threat.
As Terrific tries to get answers, Linnya tries to tell them how she made her way to the dying corpse of a celestial being. She tells the story of how she made her way to the Dark Multiverse. She tells them how she was pulled in and trapped with no sense of time and no ability to come out of her phantom form. She laments the loss of her parents and her world. I wish more time was spent exploring that. It was a nice narrative thread that could have used another page to get the reader to understand the isolation she must have felt and how she coped.
After hearing her story, Terrific decides that it is time that they all leave. He removes a piece of equipment from the machine in the heart of the corpse and use it to find a way home. As they remove an antenna from the device, they are collectively zapped with some kind of energy. Unfortunately, they don’t have time to figure out what happened when the dead body they’ve been staying in begins to stir and they find out that their time in the Dark Multiverse might have effected them in other ways as well.
There continue to be parallels between this team and another one, but that’s just one of the things you have to deal with when considering these characters in context. The overall concept works though and all of the characters are given some interesting material to work with. It will be even more intriguing to see if the momentum that is building continues.
