Last week Warner Brothers revealed the first official trailer for the upcoming return of DC’s strangest super team The Suicide Squad.

Beyond the return of Amanda Waller, Rick Flagg and Harley Quinn, the trailer revealed a slew of new bad guys turned reluctant heroes including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Thinker and King Shark. Accroding to the official synopsis of the film;

Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

So it looks like the Suicide Squad will be taking on a new threat coming out Corto Maltese, but the threat they face has deep roots in the DC Comics universe and a direct connection to the Justice League. According to the trailer, it looks like the Suicide Squad will be taking on the intergalactic villain Starro in this film.

Created by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky, Starro the Conqueror is an intergalactic starfish shaped creature that comes to Earth to conquer and enslave the populace. He was first introduced in Brave and the Bold #28 in 1960 and his appearance was also the first appearance of the Justice League of America featuring Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter. Starro has appeared multiple times over the years in comics and in animated form on series like Batman: The Brave and the Bold as well as Young Justice.

Starro’s appearance in The Suicide Squad could definitely have a deeper meaning than just being the big bad of the film and would definitely be something that Waller would want to get her hands on to use for her own ends.
