The Rundown: The worst person on the face of the planet will be the only person who could possibly save it.

Ernie Ray Clementine is possibly the worst human being on the face of the planet. Rude, crude and totally irredeemable, Ernie goes about his life in the singular pursuit of his own pleasure and does not apologize for it. Even in his pursuit of drugs, Ernie will do whatever he needs to in order to get what he wants and he doesn’t care who he possibly hurts in the process.

When he finally gets the drugs he’s after, he heads out into the street to shoot up and finds himself in the middle of a full on battle between two opposing forces. When one of them loses the experimental drug he was guarding, Ernie accidentally shoots it into his veins and finds himself not only the keeper of an insane power, but also a walking, talking target.

The Story: The Scumbag is a story that could potentially go in some weird and interesting directions. Rick Remender does a great job of pushing the boundaries with this first issue and those moments could be completely off-putting, but Remender doesn’t push them for shock value, which makes them work. The story has some great, comedic moments throughout while also leaning into the gross out, adult humor of the premise.

The Art: Lewis Larosa delivers some beautiful art in this first issue. What’s interesting about it is that the beauty of the art is contrasted with the disgusting nature of the subject matter.
